The Latrobe Valley Triathlon Club held race 2 of our Summer Series on Sunday at Hazelwood Pondage. Local athletes were keen to test themselves out after the Christmas break with a good hit out in overcast conditions, a few passing showers were enough to keep the athletes cool but not enough to deter spectators. First race of the day was the kids race which was open to kids aged 4 to 12, with the race broken up into 4 age groups it gave all the kids a chance to shine! All of the kids enjoyed the race as well as receiving their ribbon and certificate.
This was followed by the Fun Tri with many of the athletes being first timers, first across the line was Benjamin Bailey who is successfully returning from injury. Next were a pair on young guns in Eli Van Rhine and Matthew Bond, first female was Diana Van Rhine followed by Heather Urie and Alison Peter.
The day finished off with the Sprint Triathlon which was looking like being Martin Tullet's maiden victory as he lead out onto the run, but a hard charging Shane Pettingill was able to run Tullet down in the last few kilometers to take the win. Tullet finished second ahead of Andrew Legge who had a fantastic race to finish third.
Melissa Jones took out the female race comfortably ahead of fast running Kim Essex and rising junior star Rachel Pearce.
The LVTC is on the look out for more primary and secondary aged students to come along and get involved in triathlon, so please look us up and get into it!
