Paul Taylor and Peta Mullens took out round three of the Latrobe Valley Triathlon Club s summer series held at Lake Narracan on the weekend. Both Taylor and Mullens not only won the competition but they also extended their leads in the LVTC summer series. A small field took on the 300m swim, 18km cycle and 4km run event that was held in windy and mild
conditions. Matt Mullens was first out of the water in 4:41 after the 300m swim; he was followed by Taylor, Peta Mullens, Phil Lucas and Michael Jones. Lucas moved up into the lead on the cycle section with Taylor holding second and Matt Mullens in third. During the run section Taylor showed he is in good running form and over took Lucas on the 4km final leg. Taylor went on to win in a time of 53 minutes 17 seconds, Lucas held onto second with a finish time of 54 minutes 15 seconds with Matt Mullens third in 54 minutes 41 seconds. Peta Mullens won the women’s section in a time of 58 minutes 29 seconds. Taylor leads the series on 284 points from Jason Cheer 196 points and Matt Mullens and Jeff VanDenBrand locked together on 179 points, while Peta Mullens leads the women’s section on 300 points.

LVTC Summer Series Race 4 Pre Race

Paul Taylor and Peta Mullens hold the lead in the Latrobe Valley Triathlon Clubs Summer Series heading into race four to be held at Lake Narracan on Sunday 1 February. Taylor, of Hazelwood North, leads the series with a win in the third round
taking him to 284 points, he holds a 88 point lead over Jason Cheers, of Traralgon, with 196 points with Jeff VanDenBrand and Matt Mullens tied in third place on 179 points. Peta Mullens has remained uncontested in the series with 300 points. Taylor is sure to be challenged with other LVTC members starting to hit their straps as the season continues, James Timmer-Arends and Jason Cheers have each won a round of the LVTC Summer Series and Blair Turnbull, Niall Thompson and Phil Lucas have all been challenging for the lead in the previous rounds. Peta Mullens has continued her good form and is sure to
be ready for some long awaited competition. The fourth race in the LVTC Summer Series will take place at Lake Narracan on Sunday February 1, starting at 9:00am and held over a 300m swim, 18km cycle and 4km run course.

LVTC Club Meetings

Is anyone interested in attending LVTC Monthly meetings in an attempt to keep the club running?

Third Tuesday of the month at the Traralgon Outdoor Swimming Pool 7:30 PM start.

We have not has a meeting for 4 months due to lack of numbers. Also, this is the last year that our current office bearers will be holding their positions so now is the time to think about the clubs future.

IMG Triathlon Series Race 1 results

Traralgon Triathlete James Timmer-Arends took first place at race one of the IMG Triathlon series held at Elwood beach recently. Timmer-Arends joined fellow Latrobe Valley Triathlon Club members Darren Cowell, Graeme Alford, Blair Turnbull, Shaun Cattanach and Daniel Rake to take on the 500m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run event. The local Triathletes joined a field of over 400 competitors at the first round in the 5 race series.
Timmer-Arends started off well with an 8.42 swim ahead of Cattanach 8.56, Alford 9.15, Cowell 9.36, Turnbull, Mick Taylor 10.05 and Rake 11.35. During the bike leg Timmer-Arends moved into first place with a 32.12 cycle leg, Cowell was also showing good form on the cycle with a 32.28 split, next was Turnbull in 33.13, Alford 34.04, Cattanach 34.21, Taylor 37.26 and Rake 37.27.
Timmer-Arends continued to lead on the 5km run section completing the run leg in 18.48 for a finish time of 59 minutes 44 seconds to win the 45 to 49 year age group and take 16 place overall. Cowell was next of the locals to finish with a 19.45 run for a total time of one hour 1 minute 49 seconds to take 4 place in the 35 to 39 year age group and 32 place overall. Alford ran 18.41 for a finish time of one hour 2 minutes 1 second to take 6 place in the 40 to 44 year age group and 38 place overall. Turnbull ran a 19.27 run split to stop the clock in one hour 2 minutes 35 seconds and take 11 place in the 30 to 34 year age group and 48 overall. Cattanach ran 20.50 for a finish time of one hour 3 minutes 36 seconds taking 8 place in the 35 to 39 year age group and 72 place overall. Taylor completed the run in 20.50 for a finish time of one hour 8 minutes 21 seconds taking 31 place in the 25 to 29 year age group and 151 place overall. Rake ran 19.55 for a finish time of one hour 8 minutes 57 seconds to take33 place in the 25 to 29 year age group and 167 place overall. Timmer-Arends and Cowell showed they are in great form for the up coming Triathlon World Championships to be held in Queenstown, New Zealand. They
will join fellow LVTC members Jodie Healey and Debbie Rielly to contest the 1500m swim, 40km cycle and 10km run World Championship event to be held on 6 December.

LVTC Round 2 result

Peta Mullens and Jason Cheers took out race two in the Latrobe Valley Triathlon Clubs summer series held at the Hazelwood Pondage on Thursday evening.
A small field took on the 1.5km run, 12km cycle and 3km run second round in the LVTC series held at the Hazelwood Pondage, the race format was changed to a Duathlon due to the Pondage being closed to swimming. Paul Taylor lead the field after the first run with a 4:47 run, next was
Cheers ,who was backing up after a fifth placing at the Forster Half Mullens led the womens section with a 5:24 run. Cheers hit his straps on the cycle and after the 12km leg held a 25 second lead over Taylor with VanDenBrand still holding third, Mullens continued to lead the womens race with a 23:01 cycle. Cheers held onto his lead during the final run leg to win the race in 36 minutes 26 seconds, second was Taylor in 36 minutes 57 seconds with VanDenBrand third in 38 minutes 45 seconds. Peta Mullens took out the womens race in 39 minutes 35 seconds. Matt McKendry took out the junior section from brother Luke McKendry with Russell Mullens taking out the veteran section.

WINTER TRIATHLON

Temeka Day and Adam Conquest took out the Latrobe Valley Triathlon Clubs
Winter Triathlon held at the Hazelwood Pondage on Sunday 14 September.

Over sixty competitors turned out to contest the 1500m swim, 36km cycle and 10km run Winter Triathlon. The race was aptly named with weather conditions cool with a couple of brief showers during the race cooling off competitors and a stiff breeze making the cycle section quite challenging.

Simon Knowles lead the field out of the swim in 16:35 closely followed by William Beukes and Matt Stewart in 16:57 and 16:59 with Brendan O’Brien and Kane Malherbe rounding out the top five. In the women’s section Temeka Day exited the water first in 19:10 second was Lynda Dickson in 19:29 and third was Deanne Orton in 21:07, Dimity Gannon and Anna Pang rounded out the top five.

Adam Conquest was on a mission on the 36km cycle section and set a cracking pace erasing a four-minute deficit after the swim and heading onto the run with a 6 second lead over Knowles. Conquest completed the cycle in 55:18 and headed onto the to the run after 1:15:47, Knowles was 6 seconds down and had moved up to Malherbe third with O’Brien and Beukes fourth and fifth. Day took control of the woman’s race on the cycle with a 1:05:13 split to hold a 7minute lead over Anne Martin who had a strong
ride to move into second, Belinda Harrison moved to third and Dickson was in fourth.

The pressure remained high during the 10km run leg with less that 1-minute separating the top three place getters. Conquest managed to hold onto the lead with a 34:14 run to win the race in one hour 50 minutes 1 second, Malherbe moved up into second with a finish time of one hour 50 minutes 32 seconds with Stewart third in one hour 50 minutes 50 seconds. Day continued to control the women’s race with a 38:18 run to win in two hours 2 minutes 41 seconds Martin took second with a finish time of two hours 9 minutes 34 seconds and third was Harrison in two hours 15 minutes 49 seconds.

Niall Thompson was the first of the locals to finish with a time of two hours 6 seconds taking 7 place, Gavin Slavin was 10 place in two hours 5 minutes 32 seconds and Jason Cheers took 12 place with two hours 7 minutes 6 seconds.

The race could not of gone ahead without the help of the State Emergency Service Erica Unit, Sports Power, the Latrobe City, RT Gippsland, Michel’s Patisserie and Hertz Car Wash.

The next major event on the LVTC calendar is a Corporate Triathlon to be held at the Hazelwood Pondage on 16 November....More

Results round three LVTC Duathlon series

Helen Bowyer and Jason Cheers took out the final round of the Latrobe Valley Triathlon Club’s Duathlon series held at Newborough recently.

The final round of the three race series was again held in perfect racing conditions with a small but competitive field assembled for the Newborough round. The event was competed over a 4km run, 16km cycle and 2km run course including runs along the Yallourn/Moe rail trail.

Cheers and Brett Franklin jumped away from the field during the first 4km run section coming in after 14:42 seconds. They held a 40 second advantage over Dan Kirby in third James Timmer-Arends was a further 12 seconds back in fourth.

The race heated up on the cycle and after the 16km ride Cheers and Franklin were separated by only 1 second coming off the bike in 26:20 and 26:21 respectively, Timmer-Arends had moved into third with Kirby holding onto fourth.

Cheers was able to break away from Franklin during the final run with a 8:05 split to win the race in 49 minutes 7 seconds, Franklin was a close second finishing in 49 minutes 28 seconds and Timmer-Arends third in 51 minutes 35 seconds.

Bowyer had the women’s race all to herself completing the first run in 20:23, then going on to cycle the 16km in 31:48 and finish off the race with a 11:40 run for a finish time of one hour 3 minutes 51 seconds. The junior section saw a battle between Luke McKendry and Matthew McKendry, a close contest all day saw Luke first across the line in one hour 9 minutes 26 seconds and Matthew second in one hour 13 minutes 41 seconds. Jason Cheers 49:07, Brett Franklin 49:28, James Timmer-Arends 51:35, Dan Kirby 55:09, Helen Bowyer 1:03:51, Col Hardy 1:06:47, Luke Mckendry 1:09:26, Mathew Mckendry 1:13:41.

A big thank you to James Timmer-Arends for taking on the running of the Newborough round on very short notice.

The series was won by Niall Thompson with 200 points, Jason Cheers and Brett Franklin tied for second both with 196 points and third was Dan Kirby with 186 points. Helen Bowyer took the women’s section with 194 points over Tamara Brisbane with 100 points. The junior section was won by Matthew McKendry with 194 points over Luke McKendry 100 points.

The Latrobe Valley Triathlon Club will now focus on the up coming Triathlon season with the first race the winter Triathlon to be held on September 14 at the Hazelwood Pondage.

Deb Rielly makes Australian Team for Triathlon World Championships

Wonthaggi Triathlete Deb Rielly has been selected to represent Australia at the Triathlon World Championship to be held in New Zealand in December. Rielly qualified for the Australian team with her sixth place at the St Kilda round of the Accenture Triathlon Series held earlier this year. Rielly completed the 1500m swim, 40km cycle and 10km run St Kilda round in two hours 34 minutes 47 seconds.
Rielly will join four fellow Latrobe Valley Triathlon Club members to tackle the 1500m swim, 40km cycle and 10km run World Championship event. This years World Championship will be held on December 6 in Queenstown on New Zealand’s South Island.
Rielly will contest the 35 to 39 year age group in her first World Champioship, she will join James Timmer-Arends of Traralgon contesting the 44 to 49 year age group, Jodi Healey of Morwell who will contest the 30 to 34 year age group, Glenn Richardson of Hazelwood North will contest the 35 to 39 year age group and Darren Cowell of Sale will also contest the 35 to 39 year age group.
The Gippslanders will focus their training regimes in order to be in top shape for World Championship. Rielly will employ an intensive 10-week training program as part of her preparation for the December 6 competition.

Results Round 2 of LVTC Duathlon Series

Tamara Brisbane and Niall Thompson took out the Latrobe Valley Triathlon club’s Big Tree Duathlon held at Darlimurla on the weekend.
Brisbane and Thompson took advantage of the perfect conditions to take out the second round in the LVTC Duathlon series. The field took up the challenge of an off road Duathlon making a change from the more conventional on road racing.
The race began with a 4km run along the Boolarra-Mirboo North rail trail and Thompson built up a 30 second lead over Brett Franklin with Dan Kirby in third, Neil Griffiths fourth and James Timmer-Arends rounding our the top five. In the women’s field Brisbane had built a seemingly comfortable lead of 3 minutes over Helen Bowyer.
Thompson put another 1 minute 30 seconds into Franklin on the Mountain bike section with Kirby holding third. A recent birthday hadn’t slowed Timmer-Arends as he over took Griffiths on the bike with James Haylock not far behind. Bowyer went about narrowing Brisbane’s lead and at the end of the cycle was starting to apply some pressure only 30 seconds down at the second transition.
Thompson showed a clean pair of heels on the second run and completed the race in one hour 1 minute 49 seconds, Franklin took second in one hour 3 minutes 51 seconds with Kirby third in one hour 4 minutes 23 seconds. In the women’s section Brisbane responded to Bowyers charge on the bike and ran strongly to take out the women’s race in one hour 21 minutes 8 seconds with Bowyer second in one hour 23 minutes 28 seconds. Matthew McKendry took out the junior section completing the course in one hour 28 minutes 31 seconds.

The Latrobe Valley Triathlon club will hold round one of its annual
Duathlon series at Boolarra on Sunday 20 July.

The LVTC Duathlon series will decide the LVTC winter champions and will be held over three races beginning with the Boolarra race on Sunday followed by round two at Darlimurla on 3 August with the final round at Newborough on 17 August. The Boolarra round will be held over a 4km run 18km cycle and 2km run course starting at the head of the rail trail in the township of Boolarra.

The defending champions Jodi Healey and Niall Thompson are sure to be pushed with a number of LVTC members sure to be in good form for the winter series. Healey will have to look out for youngster Peta Mullens who is coming off some great results over the summer, while Thompson will be under pressure from James Timmer-Arends, Glenn Richardson and Darren Cowell, who have qualified for the World Championships to be held in New Zealand later this year. The Boolarra race will start at 10:00 am at the head of the rail trail in Boolarra.

The LVTC will also hold its annual general meeting at the Traralgon Outdoor Swimming Pool starting at 7:30pm on Tuesday 15 July. All those interested in Triathlon are most welcome to attend. After a very successful season over 2002/2003 the LVTC is looking forward to another strong season with the AGM helping to set the scene for the season ahead. Membership form

LVTC Team takes second at Mountain Designs GeoQuest 48 hour Adventure Race

Team Latrobe Valley Triathlon club took second place at the Mountain Designs GeoQuest 48 hour Adventure Race held in and around the Shoalhaven area on the NSW south coast.

Glenn Richardson, Phil Magee, Kevin Piercy and Stuart McFadzean made up Team LVTC. They joined a field of 28 teams that took on the 48-hour adventure that included 5 mountain bike legs, 2 trekking legs, an abseil and 3 kayaking completed non stop around the Shoalhaven area on the New South Wales South Coast. The race will be centred around the Bendalong Point Tourist Park where the race HQ is based.

The race began at Callala Bay with a kayak across the Jervis Bay, with checkpoints at Long Beach, Moona Moona creek and on to the transition at Iluka beach. Team LVTC completed the kayak in three hours 44 minutes holding eighth place. Teams changed from watercraft to Mountain Bike for a short 22 minute ride to Cave beach for the second transition ready for a trek from Cave beach to race head quarters at Bendalong Point. Team LVTC completed the trek in three hours 3 minutes moving up to fifth position. In the main transition area teams are able to eat and drink as well as pack more food for the upcoming legs and also change cloths as required. Leg four was a short 20 minute ride from Bendalong Point to Lake Berringer for a kayak down Lake Berringer and into Lake Conjola continuing up the lake to the Murrays Rd Bridge. Team LVTC completed the second kayak in one hour 19 minutes. Leg sixth saw teams mountain bike to Florence Head for an abseil to the base of Florence Head and continue riding to Milton where
their support crew would be waiting to transport them back to race HQ.

Team LVTC completed the second mountain bike section in five hours 59 minutes moving up into third position. Leg seven saw teams trek from race HQ through the Conjola State Forest to the Murrays Rd Bridge on Lake Conjola this leg took team LVTC eleven hours. The next leg was a kayak back to Lake Beringer taking one hour 42 minutes, followed by a short 26 minute mountain bike section back to race HQ for the final stage a mountain bike through the Cudmirrah section of the Conjola state forest. The final leg took team LVTC six hours 16 minutes. Team LVTC completed the race in 36 hours 56 minutes to take second place in the 100% male section and seventh place overall.

The event was won by the mixed Team AROC Go Lite in a time of twenty eight

Four LVTC members make Australian Team for World Championships.

Four Latrobe Valley Triathlon Club members have been selected to represent
Australia at the Triathlon World Championships to be held in Queenstown
New Zealand on December 6 2003.

James Timmer-Arends, Jodi Healey, Glenn Richardson and Darren Cowell all competed in the Triathlon Australia Accenture series from were the Australian team was selected. All races were over the 1500m swim, 40km cycle and 10km run course the same distance that will be contested in Queenstown.

Timmer-Arends, of Traralgon, completed two rounds of the series with a second place in the 40 to 44 year age group completing the Devenport round in two hours 8 minutes 8 seconds. At the St Kilda round Timmer-Arends took second place in his category in a time of two hours 8 minutes 56 seconds.

Richardson of Hazelwood North competed two rounds of the series with a 14 place in the 35 to 39 year age group with a time of two hours 9 minutes 8 seconds and at the Canberra round in two hours 2 minutes 48 seconds taking 12 place in his cartagory.

Healey of Morwell, took 14 place in the 25 to 29 year age group with a time of two hours 31 minutes 49 seconds at the Devenport round. Healey also travelled to Mooloolaba completing the race in two hours 35 minutes 40 seconds taking 23 place in her category and at St Kilda Healey took 14 place in her category with a time of two hours 34 minutes 22 seconds.

Cowell, of Sale, completed the Devenport round in two hours 10 minutes 39 seconds. Cowell also travelled to Mooloolaba finishing in two hours 15 minutes 38 seconds taking 14 place and at the St Kilda round Cowell took ninth place in his category with a time of two hours 13 minutes 3 seconds.

All four of the local will now have extra motivation over the colder winter months to train that little bit extra to be at their best for the World Championships in December.
