LVTC round 1 Results 17-11-02

Peta Mullens and James Timmer-Arends took out round one of the Latrobe Valley Triathlon Clubs summer series held at the Hazelwood Pondage on the weekend.

A field of 18 competitors took on the 300m swim, 12km cycle and 3km run event in perfect racing conditions with many spectators looking on. The first round of the LVTC summer series was run as a handicap event with race director Adam Downes handicapping the field into three waves.

The first wave was made up of Helen Bowyer, Andrew Cozier, Andrew Harrigon, Robert Sapkin and Dale Ingleton with Cozier jumping out to an early lead posting the fastest swim of the day with a 4:19 split . The second wave was made up of Jodi Healey, Peta Mullens, Matt Mullens and Phil Lucas setting off on 3 minutes. Lucas led this wave through the swim and set off after the leaders on the cycle section. The back markers starting six minutes behind the lead wave was made up of Dean Joannides, Jeff VanDenBrand, Paul Taylor, Adrian Bacchetti, Russell Stewart, Blair Turnbull and James Timmer-Arends. The back markers made up little time during the swim however Timmer-Arends started to real in the front runners with a 20:14 cycle, others showing cycle speed were Turnbull 21:33, Taylor,VanDenBrand and Lucas all riding under 23minutes. In the womens section Peta Mullens worked hard on the swim and cycle to lead Healey going into the run.

Timmer-Arends continued to move through the field during the run section taking first place with a time of 35 minutes 17 seconds in a very close battle for the minor placing’s saw Taylor run strongly for second with a finish time of 37 minutes 19 seconds and VanDenBrand took 3 place with 37 minutes 34 second and Turnbull was never out of it taking 4 place in 37 minutes 59 seconds.

In the womens section Healey put in a strong run but was unable to eat into Mullens lead, Mullens took out the womens race with a finish time of 42 minutes 9 seconds, with Healey taking second in 43 minutes 21 seconds and Bowyer took 3 in 45 minutes 6 seconds. Jonathan Hayes took first place over Matt Lansdown in the short course event.

Triathlon Thompson World Championship Result 02

Latrobe Valley Triathlon Club member Niall Thompson completed the Triathlon World Championship held in Cancun, Mexico on November 9.

Thompson joined a 200 strong Australian team and 1847 triathletes from all over the world to contest the 1500m swim, 40km cycle and 10km run world championship.

The event was run in hot and humid conditions, Thompson began the race with a solid 24 minute 47 second split for the 1500m swim. Thompson started the 40km cycle section well and was just getting into the grove before a fall on one of the tight corners on the three-lap cycle course. With some skin missing from his hip and elbow he continued and still rode strongly for a split of one hour 28 seconds. Thompson swapped his bike for running shoes and with the temperature now well over 30C he ran strongly completing the 10km run section in 41 minutes 48 seconds for a finish time of two hours 10 minutes 4 seconds to take 33 place in the 25 to 29 year age group and 137 place overall. Thompson said the fall during the cycle didn’t affect him too much during the race however it was pretty sore a couple of days after the event. The race was held in some of the hottest conditions I have experienced he added. Thompson will now set his sights on the Shepperton Half Ironman in a couple of weeks.

Latrobe Valley Triathlon Club member James Timmer-Arends took second place in the World Masters Games Triathlon in Geelong on the weekend.

Timmer-Arends joined with other local triathletes Debbie Rielly, Jason Cheers and team category entrants Rod Newton, Darren Cowell and Mark Waller to compete in the 1500m swim, 40km cycle and 10km run event held in Geelong.

A large field of over competitors from all over the globe contested the World Masters Event. One of the aims of the World Masters Games is to encourage participation in sport through out life.

Timmer-Arends showed he is in top form by swimming 22 minutes 46 seconds, cycling one hour 8 minutes 25 seconds and then running 41 minutes 59 seconds for a finish time of two hours 13 minutes 10 seconds and taking 9 place out right and second place in the 40 to 44 year age group.

Rielly swam 26 minutes 31 seconds, cycled one hour 20 minutes 48 seconds and ran 49 minutes 50 seconds for a finish time of two hours 37 minutes and 9 seconds to take 123 place out right and 3 place in the 30 to 35 year age group.

Cheers, coming off the back of a strong performance at the tough Sydney Marathon, also raced well at the Geelong event. He swam 25 minutes 14 seconds then cycled one hour 15 minutes 58 seconds and ran 43 minutes 32 seconds for a finish time of two hours 24 minutes 44 seconds to take 49 out right and 15 in the 30 to 35 year age group.

Opting for the team experience Newton, Cowell and Waller showed their opposition a clean pair of heals with a 23 minutes 49 second swim by Newton who then handed over to Cowell who cycled one hour 9 minutes 21 seconds and then Waller completed the race with a 38 minute 36 second run for a finish time of two hours 11 minutes 46 seconds to take first place in their age section.

The LVTC will hold it’s annual Mystery Triathlon on October 27 at the Hazelwood Pondage starting at 10:00am.

Latrobe Valley Triathlon Club member Niall Thompson is set to compete in the Duathlon World Championships to be held in Alpharetta, America on October 19.

Thompson will compete against the worlds best Duathletes in a 10 km run, 40km cycle and 5km run event. The Duathlon event is the winter equivalent of Triathlon where the swim is replaced with a run. The Traralgon Triathlete competed in last years Duathlon World Championships held in Rimini, Italy where he had a 35:28 first run, 1:06:40 cycle and a 17:25 second run for a time of 1:59:33 to place 15 th in the 25 to 29 year age group. This experience will help Thompson prepare for the Alpharetta event. After the Duathlon Thompson will head to Canada to train with friends before travelling to Cancun, Mexico on November 9 and compete against the worlds best triathletes over the 1500m swim, 40km cycle and 10km run World Triathlon Championship. top
Jane Warren and Jack Bath took out the Latrobe Valley Triathlon Club’s Winter Triathlon held at the Hazelwood Pondage on Sunday 22 9 02

Warren of Warrnambool and Bath of Geelong West headed a high quality field of 60 individuals and 2 teams who ventured to the Hazelwood Pondage to compete in the 1500m swim, 36km cycle and 10km run event. Many of the competitors made the trip from Melbourne to test out their winter training and they were rewarded with close to perfect racing conditions. Robert Harris and Andrew Steel set the early pace exiting the water in 15 minutes 34 seconds next out of the water was a small group of Anthony Wilks, Jack Bath and Robin Tullett 30 seconds back. In the womens section Jane Warren built a 2 minute 17 second lead over Robyn McGeary with Belinda Harrison third. Bath showed a clean pair of wheels on the cycle section moving into the lead with a 56 minute 18 seconds cycle leg, next in was Tullett 2 minutes down with Steel third and Brett Healy fourth. Warren continued to lead the women from McGeary with Annett Kendell moving up into third place. Bath extended his lead on the run section with a 35 minute 5 second run section to win the event in one hour 47 minute 27 seconds, Tullett survived a late charge from Harris to take second in one hour 50 minutes 13 seconds. Harris set the fastest run of the day with a 34 minute 27 second run to take third in one hour 53 minutes 14 seconds. Warren also extended her lead on the run section to win the womens section in two hours 3 minutes 40 seconds McGeary held onto second coming in two hours 10 minutes 4 seconds with Kendall third in two hours 16 minutes 42 seconds. Traralgon’s Niall Thompson and Gavin Slavin showed they are in good form coming in 7 and 8 place respectively. Thompson stopped the clock in one hour 55 minutes 27 and showed that his preparation for the World Triathlon Championship to be held in Mexico in November is on track while Slavin’s preparation for the Ironman Triathlon World Championship to be held in Hawaii in October is also going well with a one hour 57 minute 50 seconds race. The race could not have gone ahead without the support of local businesses RT Gippsland, Hazelwood Power, Juice Plus and Spikes Bikes. Morwell's Jodi Healey and Leongatha's Brett Franklin took out the final round of the Latrobe Valley Triathlon Club's Duathlon series held at Newborough on the weekend.

Franklin raced well in his first race back after a long break, he showed his class with a 12:37 fist run to hold a 20 second lead over Mick Taylor with veteran Ironman competitor Graeme Alford in third and Adam Downes in fourth.

James Timmer-Arends showed his strength on the bike to come from 1 minute down after the run to come in first off the bike with Franklin only 5 seconds back. A slick transition by Franklin saw him out first on the second run with Timmer-Arends 3 seconds down and Taylor third a further 4 seconds back, Blair Turnbull began a charge on the cycle leg moving up into fourth.

Franklin used his strength to build a 1 minute lead to win in 45 minutes 57 seconds over Taylor second in 46 minutes 58 seconds, Turnbull continued his charge passing Timmer-Arends to take third in 48 minutes 02 seconds. Healey remained uncontested all day to win the womens section in 59 minutes 25 seconds.

Jodi Healey and Niall Thompson wrapped up the series both on 200 points. Points are accumulated as a percentage of the winners time and competitors can drop their worst result. The percentage system means that competitors must race all the way to the finish line to gain maximum points. The importance of racing all the way to the finish line was emphasized by the closeness of second place in the series. Mick Taylor pipped James Timmer-Arends by 0.68 points. Taylor took second with 193.72 points with Timmer-Arends third on 193.04 points.

Darlimurla Duathlon Results 18/8/02

Niall Thompson and Jodi Healey took out race 2 in the Latrobe Valley Triathlon Clubs 3 race Duathlon series held at Darlimurla on the weekend.

Fine weather greeted the small group of racers who contested the 7km run, 12km mountain bike and 750m run event. The race began at the Darlimurla siding of the Boolarra/Mirboo North rail trail.

Thompson went out to an early lead in the first run leg and at the end of the out and back run held a 40 second break over Adam Downes and Glenn Richardson with Jeff VanDenBrand a further 30 seconds down and Troy Avery in fifth.

Thompson extended his lead on the mountain bike section building his lead to 1minute 20 seconds. Richardson broke away from Downes to hold second with VanDenBrand holding fourth.

Healey was uncontested all day and won the women's section in one hour 16 minutes 16 seconds. Richardson ran hard over the last run section however Thompson maintained his lead to win the event in 58 minutes 58 seconds. Richardson took second in one hour 21 seconds, Downes held on to third in one hour 53 seconds.

The mountain bike section saw a change to the traditional Duathlon format and all competitors remarked on how much harder the race was compared to the traditional road format.
