Latrobe Valley Triathlon Club members Peta Mullens and Phil Magee placed well at round four of the East Gippsland Triathlon series held at the Port of Bairnsdale.
Mullens, of Tyres, took out the women’s section with Magee, of Traralgon, placing third in the men’s section of round four. The Bairnsdale Triathlon is a well-known event on the Gippsland Triathlon calendar with many competitors coming back year after year. The local pair joined over 50 competitors to take on the 600m swim, 22km cycle and 5.6km run event.
Robert Harris opened up a 24 second gap over Ryan Cross, of Bairnsdale, after the 600m swim down the Mitchell River, holding third a further 38 seconds down was Mark Ariens, also of Bairnsdale, Phil Magee, of Traralgon, was 10 seconds down with Phil Lucas, of Traralgon, the only other competitor to exit the water under 10 minutes.
In the women’s section Dimmity Gannon led the field out of the water in 10 minutes 47 seconds, closely followed by Peta Mullens only 7 seconds down, Kattie Kennon held third in front of Leonie Reggardo and Kim Bambrook.
Harris continued to lead on the cycle leg with a 37 minute 58 second split, Cross worked hard to bridge the gap with the fastest split of the day completing the 22km in 37 minutes 53 seconds, Darren Cowell, of Sale, was also on a charge with a 37 minute 57 second cycle leg moving into third, Magee held fourth and Ariens was holding fifth.
Kennon blasted her way around the cycle section with the fastest split of the day 44 minutes 47 second and into the lead, Mullens, clocking a 46 minute 24 second cycle, passed Gannon but couldn’t stay with Kennon, Gannon held third and Reggardo rode a solid 51 minutes 51 seconds to hold fourth.
Harris put in the continued to have the competition under control with posting
the fastest run of the of the day completing the 5.6km in 19 minutes 11 seconds
to win the event in one hour 5 minutes 45 seconds, Cross cemented second with
a 19 minute 51 second run to finish in one hour 6 minutes 44 seconds, Magee
used his strength on the run to move into third with a finish time of one hour
9 minutes 12 seconds. Ariens ran into fourth to finish in one hour 9 minutes
55 seconds, after his strong cycle Cowell faded a little in the run to place
fifth with a time of one hour 10 minutes 49 seconds.
Mullens continued her good running form to post the fastest run of the day,
24 minutes 37 seconds, to pass a fading Kennon to win the race in one hour
21 minutes 55 seconds, Kennon held off a hard charging Gannon to take second
in one hour 23 minutes 18 seconds, Gannon gave her best with the second fastest
run split, 25 minutes 4 seconds , to take third in one hour 24 minutes 59 seconds,
Wendy Aitken moved into fourth with one hour 29
minutes.

LVTC Round 4 results Hazelwood Pondage
Jodi Healey and Phil Magee were the winners at round 4 of the Latrobe Valley Triathlon Clubs summer series held at the Hazelwood Pondage on the weekend.
A stiff breeze made for hard work on the swim and cycle legs for the 16 competitors who took on the 300m swim, 12km cycle and 2.5km run event. Race director Adam Downes graded the field into 3 waves, he set a handicap of seven minutes for the second wave and ten minutes for the back markers.
Andrew Crozier lead the first wave out of the water in 3:59 held had opened up a big lead over Dale Ingleton second in 5:21, Robert Sapkin was third in 6:18, Bonnie Newton-Hoare was next leading the women in 7:36 followed by Joanne Porter 8:25 and Neale Knott 8:30.
Crozier continued to lead first wave with a 25:37 cycle, Ingleton gained 11 seconds on Crozier during the cycle with a 25:26 and extended his lead over Sapkin in third with 25:54, Newton-Hoare was next in 26:28, first timer Porter had a solid 37:44 cycle.
Crozier extended his lead on the run with a 16:27, completing the race in 42:04, Ingleton held Sapkin at bay and finished in 43:00, Sapkin finish in 43:42, Newton-Hoare was next finishing in 46:58, Knott was next in 48:17 and Porter finished in 1:02:25 a good result for her first race.
Phil Lucas led the second wave with a 4:33 swim followed by Dean Joanides in 4:43, Jodi Healey in 5:32 and Neil Griffiths 6:55.
Lucas extended his lead in the second wave with a 23:34 ride, Joanides held second with a 24:57, Healey came off the bike in 25:13 and Griffiths was picking up the pace with 24:13.
Lucas continued to lead in the second wave finishing in 39:13, Joanides was next in 40:47 followed by Griffiths 41:26 and Healey, the fastest female of the day, finishing in 42:08.
The third wave saw a very competitive race indeed Paul Taylor lead out of the swim in 4:30 followed by a close knit group of Phil Magee 4:33, Niall Thompson 4:38, James Timmer-Arends 4:39, Jason Cheers 4:41 and Blair Turnbull 4:48.
The competition hotted up on the cycle leg for the third wave Thompson took the lead with a 20:35 cycle holding a 1 second gap over Magee who rode 20:41, Timmer-Arends was a futher1 second down with a 20:37 ride, Turnbull was making progress and had moved into fourth with 20:38, Cheers remained steady with 21:39 and Taylor came off the bike in 22:30.
The third wave came down to a two way battle between Thompson and Magee with Thompson running on Magee’s shoulder for the entire 2.5km until Magee kicked in the sprint and crossed the line with a 3 second gap. Magee’s finish time was 34:23, next was Thompson in 34:26, Timmer-Arends was next in 35:22, followed by Turnbull in 35:53, Cheers was next in 36:11 and next was Taylor in 36:53.
